Calculate XIRR: your real portfolio return
Enter your deposits and withdrawals with their dates and add today's portfolio value. The calculator works out the money-weighted return (XIRR) — the figure that accounts for your actual timing.

What does this mean for your real wealth?
The XIRR above holds for the payments you entered. For your real portfolio, Planafolio calculates it from all imported buys, sells and dividends – for free.

What does the result mean?
XIRR is your personal annual return: it accounts for when and how much you paid in or took out. You can read it like an interest rate – this is what your money would have earned per year in the model.
Model assumptions
- Exactly the payments you enter count, with their dates (day-accurate, 365-day year); the current portfolio value is treated as a final payment today.
- Taxes on returns (German flat tax, advance lump sum) are not deducted.
- Fund costs, order fees and spreads are not deducted.
- All amounts are nominal. Purchasing power falls with inflation, which the result does not reflect.
How the calculator works
The calculator looks for the annual rate at which the present value of all payments is exactly zero (internal rate of return, day-accurate). Planafolio solves the equation numerically with Newton's method and a bisection fallback.
More on the methodologyWorked example
Example: return of a portfolio with three deposits
Worked example using the calculator's default values above: three deposits on different dates and the portfolio value on the fixed valuation date of 15 January 2026, so the example doesn't shift every day. The calculator above values the portfolio as of today instead — with the same value, the period there is longer and the annual return therefore lower.
Inputs
- Deposit on Jan 15, 2023€10,000
- Deposit on Mar 1, 2024€5,000
- Deposit on Jun 1, 2025€2,500
- Portfolio value on Jan 15, 2026€21,500
Calculation
| Total deposits | €17,500 |
|---|---|
| Portfolio value plus withdrawals | €21,500 |
| Gain in euros | €4,000 |
Result
| Annual return (XIRR) | 9.06% |
|---|
9.06% per year is the interest rate at which all deposits, each compounded from its own date, add up to exactly the portfolio value on the valuation date. Money paid in later had less time to grow and therefore counts less.
Common mistakes
Encoding the direction in the sign
Amounts are always entered as positive numbers. Whether money goes into or out of the portfolio is set by the type of payment (deposit or withdrawal), not by a minus sign in the amount field.
Using an outdated portfolio value
The portfolio value you enter counts as the closing payment on today's date. If you use last year-end's value instead, the period is the wrong length and the annual rate is distorted.
Leaving out paid-out income
If dividends or interest go to a settlement account instead of staying in the portfolio, they count as a withdrawal from it. If they are missing from the list, the return comes out too low.
Taking short periods at face value
XIRR always expresses the result as an annual rate. Over a few weeks or months, even a small price move produces a very high or very low annual figure that never actually materialises.

What can I do?
Use your real purchases and sales instead of example values – in your portfolio, Planafolio works out the return from your imported transactions.
In short
What XIRR tells you
Three things that set this figure apart from a plain percentage.
Return per year, not in total
XIRR converts your result into an annual rate. That makes two portfolios comparable even if one has run for three years and the other for twelve.
Your timing counts
Every cash flow enters with its real date. Money paid in early works for longer — a large sum just before a drawdown drags the result down.
Not the same as TTWROR
TTWROR deliberately strips out your deposits and withdrawals and measures only the investment itself. XIRR measures your personal result, timing included.
FAQ
Questions about the XIRR calculator
XIRR is the annual return on the money you invested when payments happen at arbitrary dates – exactly what happens with savings plans, lump sums and withdrawals. In German Excel the function is called XINTZINSFUSS, in Google Sheets XIRR.
Yes. XIRR is the internal rate of return (IRR) for payments on arbitrary days. It is also called the money-weighted return, because every euro counts for the time it was invested.
Both, for different questions. XIRR shows your personal return including the timing of your deposits and withdrawals. The time-weighted return (TTWROR) removes the payments and is suited for comparing with an index.
Because it is annualised. A 2% gain in one month corresponds to about 27% per year. The figure only becomes meaningful over longer periods.
Every deposit (including every savings-plan instalment) and every withdrawal with its date, plus today's portfolio value. With Planafolio you don't have to type them in: XIRR is calculated automatically from your imported transactions.
Portfolio Performance's English documentation calls it "Internal Rate of Return (IRR)", the German one "Interner Zinsfuß (IZF)". It is the same figure as XIRR: the annualised return on the money you invested, including the timing of your payments. Portfolio Performance shows the time-weighted return separately as TTWROR.
